India has a vast resource of beach sand minerals along the Eastern and the Western coastal lines. The Beach Sand Minerals are usually heavier due to higher specific gravity and because of this property, these are also known as Heavy Minerals. The Heavy Minerals are themselves a mixture of a variety of minerals like monazite, ilmenite, rutile, zircon. sillimanite, garnet etc.

Garnet Overview

Garnet sand is a product of natural almandine, also known as natural abrasive due to its abrasive properties. The occurrence of the beach sand deposit is usually in the form of Dunes along the shorelines of the sea & it is also the same for River garnet. It is washed under spiral washer after proper drying, The concentrate is processed using Electrostatic & magnetic roll separators which remove all magnetic and non magnetic impurities. The purified Garnet is graded by using vibrating screens to various grades with as per size specifications.

Industrial use of Garnet sand

Garnet sand is mostly used for sandblasting, water Filtration, Water jet Cutting & Abrasive papers. It is also used in the preparation of non-skid tracks, steps, sports Ground Surface. It is also used as abrasive media in Coated abrasives like Grinding Wheels and belts that are used in cleaning/polishing various surfaces like glass, ceramics, wood & metals.

1.Sand Blasting / Abrasive Blasting:- Abrasive blasting is mostly related to cleaning painted and unpainted steel. It may also be used with care to prepare concrete and masonry surfaces and to clean and roughen existing coatings for painting.
Grade Used for Abrasive blasting (medium to coarse ):-

2. Water Jet cutting:- It is a machine, which is capable of cutting a wide variety of materials using a very high-pressure jet of water, or a mixture of water and Garnet abrasive substance. Garnet with precise size and low dust is found to be effective in cutting stainless steel, marbles, granite, titanium alloys, glasses, garments, etc. with high accuracy to any geometrical shape.
Grade Used for water jet cutting (Fine Grade):-

3. Water Filtration:- Garnet is an effective filter media. Garnet is a chemically inert and non-metallic mineral, which is commonly found in the natural environment. Garnet is also good in hardness and durability. It consists of high specific gravity, as well as its chemical and abrasive resistance, which makes garnet an effective filter media. It is normally used as the lower (final) filtration layer of a multi-bed downflow filtration system.

Grade Used for water Filtration ( coarse grade ):-

4. Other Use :- abrasive papers, cleaning/polishing  media for surface like glass, ceramics, wood & metals.
